All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Tips for Safe Holiday Travel

The old saying says, “There’s no place like home for the holidays.” While we agree, we’d like to encourage those of you who are traveling over the holidays to take precautions. In other words, we want you to arrive alive—preferably in time for the holiday dinner. Here are a few tips that may help:

1. Have your car inspected. This doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. Before leaving town for seasonal celebrations, have your mechanic take a quick look. Get the oil changed if necessary. Make sure hoses and belts are secure and in good repair. Check tires and fluid levels. Simple fixes now are better than expensive breakdowns on the road.

2. Carefully plan your route. Don’t rely on your GPS to get you to your destination. Before you leave, check a map and consider alternate routes. In the event of road closures, you’ll be glad you planned ahead.

3. Stay hydrated. Bring along your water bottle, and make sure everyone in the car has enough to drink. Dehydration can lead to uncomfortable physical symptoms, including leg cramps. Worse, failure to drink enough water while driving can result in drowsiness and inattention to road hazards.

4. Stop regularly. Getting out to stretch your legs can make a big difference in highway safety. It reduces the risk of highway hypnosis and helps drivers remain alert.

5. Pack an emergency kit. Anyone driving during the winter months should bring along a winter emergency kit. Include items such as a flashlight and batteries, transistor radio, blankets, light snow shovel, boots, nutritious snacks (dried fruit, nuts, granola, etc.), water to drink, and sand or kitty litter in case you get stuck.

6. Take your time. Safe driving is the key to successful holiday travel. Remember, you’re never late until you get there.

Wherever you travel for the holidays this year, we hope you have a beautiful time with family and loved ones. Please, plan ahead for safety’s sake, and if an accident happens, contact Fox Insurance. We’re always here to help.
